Michael Muller of Balmorhea had maybe my favorite take on the Dream Homes record when I asked a bunch of artists/humans I admired for quotes. I first met the Balmorhea crew (Michael, Rob and Aisha) through Alex Dupree in the early Zookeeper days. Several of them joined Alex in playing a beautiful rendition of an Innocence Mission song as my wife and I walked down the aisle at our wedding in 2008. I’ve continued to enjoy their work and watching their journey unfold over the years. Read Michael’s full quote below. ❤️

Is there a name for the feeling of discovering a memory that you have forgotten, only you didn’t realize it was forgotten until something out of the blue sparks it back into being? This specific and strange and beautiful sensation is the only way I can describe the palpable familiarity at the forefront of my mind (and body?) as this music pours out of my speakers. Though this is new music, it somehow embodies this quality that it maybe has always existed. There is a swirling air of fragility and poignant melancholia cast over everything here. The rhythms seem to slide in and out, being played just a hair behind the beat — imbuing an effortless nature; a beautiful, intentional languidness. I met Matthew in Brooklyn when The Gloria Record f

I met Matthew in Brooklyn when The Gloria Record first hooked up with The Arena Rock Recording Co. I was spending a fair amount of time there and getting to know Greg Glover (the truest of true) quite well. Greg and Aaron from Arena Rock were part of a softball league on a team representing Pete’s Candy Store and Matthew was also on the team. He gave me a cassette copy of early mixes of the “Let It Go” album and we wore it out in the van. The song “Blonde On Blonde” and really the whole record was such a revelation.

Later we would play a few shows with them before either of our new records were out. Brian Malone and I actually took it on ourselves to sequence the “Let It Go” record for them on a trip back to Austin from NYC driving the labels van back for one of the “Start Here” tours. This was a task they had not given us, nor did we share our conclusions, but I remember being somewhat disappointed in the bands sequencing after putting it into our own and enjoying it that way for so long. At any rate Matthew is a gem and such a down to earth incredible artist and I am happy for all of the success and continued inspiration they have had and given me. And it feels good to know he appreciates the music I continue to make.
